3 Churches & “Keeping The Faith”!
By Thomas R. Haverland
I have been emotionally & physically involved in all three of our Parishes during my life-time of 86+ years here on God's Good Earth! Yes those three illustrious Parishes are St. James (of the Valley) Wyoming; Our Lady of the Rosary (O.L.R.) Greenhills & Good ole St. Matthias here in Forest Park!!
I attended St. James Parish & Parochial School down on Sherman Ave. by the R.R. Tracks. Then the towns church-members of Wyoming & St. James pontifically changed the venerable name of St.James to “St James of the Valley” Church & School when they moved up to Springfield Pike.
My Dear Mother Catherine & my Father “Gus” said that it should have been named “St. James of the 5 Cent Bingo”; as that was the real way that the Parish up on Springfield Pike was financed! I attended St. James all 8 years of my parochial grade school education & I sang in the Boys Choir at St. Jimmies (Boy Soprano)! I spent my Freshman year at Roger Bacon H.S. 1942! So this was our families 1st Parish; (Church # 1)
When we moved to Greenhills, Ohio in 1942, we were very early members of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish from ”1942 thru 1964”!
At first when we moved to Greenhills in 1942, Holy Mass was held & heard in the Gymnasium of the Greenhills Community Bldg. Until we built the O.L.R Grade School foundation, Mass was heard in the finished basement of the eventual Grade School above until the present Our Lady of the Rosary edifice was built!
I sang also in the O.L.R Church Choir (Tenor)! (Church # 2 )!
My Dear wife Sally and I were married there on February 11th of 1961 by Father Gallagher! By 1964, 2 of our (4) children had arrived. We moved out of our 1 bed-room apartment in Greenhills and bought our present home in Forest Park, Ohio. We are Charter Members of St. Matthias Parish to this present day ! (We first held Mass in the Cameron Park Grade School Gym!
Good Ole Father Lonsway was our 1st Priest & founder of St. Matthias, and asked me to be a Eucharistic Minister (Lay Distributor) which humbled me. After the 'urging' of Father Lonsway, “His Will Be Done”; (with some arm-twisting) I accepted and was Lay Distributor for years here at St. Matthias!
Presently I am“home-bound” and unable to attend Mass; I depend on Sally, my Dear wife (of 53 years); and the V.A. to take care of this “Ole Bag-o-Bones” at my ripe age of 86 +years! We bless the days when Cindy Lewis, our wonderful Eucharistic Minister; who brings us Holy Communion every Tuesday!
(Dear Old St. Matthias is our last but not least (Church #3)!
Forgive me for “Tooting My Horn” & bragging somewhat; but I am so proud of my affiliations with all three 3 wonderful and great Parishes!
St. James “Of The Valley”; Our Lady of the Rosary & St. Matthias! God Bless You All for your prayers ; and lastly “Keep The Faith”!
Peace & Love;
Tom & Sally Haverland
